Nepal Police should be authorised to command provincial : IG Khana

Kathmandu : Chief of Nepal Police, IG Sarbendra Khanal, has demanded that the new law allow Nepal Police issue directives and commands to provincial police units.

Speaking at a meeting of State Affairs and Good Governance Committee of Parliament on Thursday, Khanal demanded that the national police organisation possess a right to command the provincial units on sensitive issues like national security.

Because Nepal shares open border with india, the provincial police units need to work under Nepal Police at border points like Birgunj, Bhairahawa and Biratnagar, according to him.

The meeting was called to discuss a bill on adjusting police staff in the new federal setup.

During the meeting, the lawmakers expressed their opinions on whether chief police officers in districts and provinces should be appointed by Nepal Police or provincial police.

Home Secretary Prem Kumar Rai was also present on the occasion.
